Who Is Responsible for Your Water Line in Memphis?

Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) maintains the water mains and the pipe up to your meter. From the meter to your home, the service line is your responsibility as the homeowner. That means leaks on your side of the meter fall to you to repair, regardless of the cause.

MLGW has been replacing lead water service lines since 2012 and has inspected or replaced more than 11,000 lines. Federal infrastructure funding is now available to help homeowners replace lead lines on their side of the service. If your home was built before 1973 and you haven’t confirmed your line material, it’s worth asking. According to MLGW, Shelby County stopped allowing lead pipes in new construction that year.

Homes built before 1980 are more likely to have galvanized steel water lines. Galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside out over decades, narrowing the interior diameter and eventually failing. Clay lines, also common in older Memphis-area homes, crack more readily under ground movement.
