A flooded dishwasher can result in a wet, soapy mess that’s even less fun to clean than the dishes themselves. Luckily, the most common cause of flooded washers is a quick and easy fix you can take care of yourself. If a blocked drain isn’t the problem, Smith’s Plumbing Services is available around-the-clock for quick repairs.

Step One: Unplug the Dishwasher

The very first thing you should do is disconnect the dishwasher from power. The quickest way to do this is to simply unplug the unit at the outlet, but you must be very careful as water and electricity can be a deadly combination. If you can’t access the plug, or don’t feel safe due to the amount of water on the floor, you can shut off power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker.

Step Two: Remove All the Contents of the Washer

Once the dishwasher is disconnected from power, it’s safe to start fixing the problem. However, you’ll need to remove all dishes and racks from the inside of the washer in order to access the drain gate.

Step Three: Clear Debris from the Drain Gate

The most common cause of a flooded dishwasher is a clogged drain. Look for any debris that might be blocking the drain gate and clean it out. Once you’ve cleared the drain, the water should start to drain immediately. If the water drains, you’ve more than likely solved the problem and can start running the dishwasher again. If not, you’ll want to call an experienced plumber to troubleshoot the issue.

Step Four: Call Smith’s Plumbing Services

If clearing the drain of debris doesn’t solve the problem, there is likely an issue further down the line. Among many other possibilities, the hose attached to the back of the dishwasher may be clogged and needs to be cleared or replaced.
