Many people use their garbage disposals to help with clean up, but few fully understand just what you can put down the garbage disposal and what you should never put down the garbage disposal unit. The following list of items is a list of things you should never drop down the garbage disposal.

1. Grease, Oil or Fat

Grease, oil, and fat should never go down the garbage disposal as they can slowly build up over time cause drainage issues. Once you finish preparing your meal, dump the excess grease in an extra can or jar. Once the jar or can is filled with grease, oil or fat, simply throw it out with your garbage.

2. Coffee Grounds

Coffee grounds can be tricky, as they seem like they’re going down easily, but can pile up and create a mud-like sludge in your drains causing them to clog.

3. Fibrous Produce

Products like celery, corn husks, and other fibrous food should not be deposited down the garbage disposal as their fibers could become tangled in the blades of the disposal unit causing it to jam.

4. Eggshells

The membrane along the inner wall of the eggshell can get snarled in the blades of the garbage disposal unit and cause a jam. Dispose of your eggshells in the trash or a compost pile.

5. Bones

With the exception of fish bones, no bone should be placed down the garbage disposal. Poultry and beef bones will likely not break down in your garbage disposal unit and eventually just get caught in your drain.
