Whether your tiles retain water due to lack of ventilation or you have a plumbing leak, mildew and mold develop in bathrooms due to moisture buildup. It’s a common problem in every household. Worst case scenario can lead to a series of health problems, such as fungal infections, allergic reactions, and mycotoxin poisoning. However, it is also one of the easiest to fix and prevent. If it hasn’t evolved to an issue of epic proportions, you may be able to take remedial measures yourself.

While mold and mildew sightings may be obvious, it’s best to investigate hidden areas as well, including under sinks, bath fixtures, surrounding the shower door, exhaust fans, crawl spaces, underneath the bathroom in the basement and in between walls. It’s important to understand potential mold development isn’t limited to just the bathroom. If that is a case for your mold situation, you must seek immediate, professional help.

How to get rid of mildew and mold includes the following:

  • Clean with mold-killing products, including bleach, hydrogen peroxide or vinegar. However, do not mix these products together, since it can lead to toxic reactions.
  • While cleaning, open windows and doors to circulate fresh air and dry out the mold.
  • Strip and replace any sealant or caulking which contains mold growth.

Once you’ve eradicated the issue, the following describes ways to prevent mildew and mold from growing in your bathroom for good:

  • If you have a ventilation fan, always use it when you shower or take a bath. Make sure you leave it on for 30 minutes after you’ve finished. If you don’t have a ventilation fan, install one as soon as possible.
  • Don’t leave shampoo and conditioner bottles, loofahs, or toys in the shower. These items typically provide hiding spaces for mold to develop.
  • Make use of shower curtains that are mildew-resistant. Another alternative is to wash or replace them on a frequent basis.
  • Regularly wash your bathroom mats.
  • Maintain humidity levels in the house at 50%. Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner if necessary.
